Every great spiritual tradition has understood the power of sound to link matter and energy, body and spirit, and in yogic and tantric systems of India this art has reached its apex. Ancient yogis developed highly effective methods of using sound to experience the 7 chakras as well as the 5 koshas and to balance the body’s subtle energies.

This workshop will serve as an opportunity for participants to experience directly the sounds that define and describe the ancient yoga traditions. We will review the sounds of Sanskrit, in the 5 unique mouth positions, as we chant first the alphabet then Sanskrit texts such as the Mahamrtunjaya, Gayatri Mantra, Guru Stotram, 32 names of Durga and the Ganaptiatharvashirshopanishat.

We will also use Sanskrit sounds to directly engage the body through the chanting of the Mantra Purusha and in asana practice. You will use asana to engage the chakra system directly through movement and mantra. The chakras connect the movement of prana or subtle life force to the gross physical body through central and peripheral nervous systems. There will also be a brief review and study of the 5 koshas or subtle energetic sheaths that surround the physical body in preparation for mediation on the final day.

Sanskrit, the language of the human spirit, is the perfect instrument for bringing about healing on many levels. Physically, its resonating power promotes healing. Mentally it awakens the natural brightness, agility and order of the mind. Spiritually, it facilitates an expansion of awareness, tranquility and bliss.

The purpose this course is to provide personal knowledge and an experience of the essential yoga anatomy of the chakras and koshas by the power of chanting in the Sanskrit language. There is a transformation of the vibrational quality of the individual energy field by engaging directly the sounds that exist within the body through these ancient chants and practices. It is meant to offer both beginning and seasoned yoga practitioners an opportunity to experience the power of Sanskrit sounds as a way to understand the nuance of subtle anatomy and as an instrument for the healing of body mind and spirit.

To be Rescheduled - Sanyama – Collingswood, NJ

Patanjali's Yoga Sutras gives us the definitive description of Yoga.
It offers us a precise inner mapping of the essential truths for
strengthening awareness and being free from self-imposed
obstacles. It is a crystal clear model of living consciously in the
present, being sure of our path and our choices.

The Yoga Sutras consists of 195 Sutras, or short aphorisms, which
are divided into 4 books. They lay out a map that leads the student
of yoga into the most subtle states of consciousness. Sanyama is
the meditation practice described in the third chapter of the Yoga
Sutras. The Bhuta Jaya (Mastery of the Elements) Sanyama offers
a simple and clear way to experience the inward movement of
consciousness by utilizing these ancient techniques.

This introductory class offers the unique opportunity to experience
Sanyama directly, through the application of specific sutras that
outline this movement toward the subtle. We will review and
chant essential Sutras that outline the basics of the Sanyama
practice as well as the Bhuta Jaya Sanyama. Then we will apply
the sutras in a guided meditation practice.

This introduction to the Yoga Sutras and Sanyama Meditation is
designed to provide a preliminary experience of the practices
outlined by Patanjali. It is meant to be starting point for
understanding the deeper meaning and purpose of the Yoga Sutras.
This class is appropriate for both beginning and experienced
meditators. No meditation experience is necessary.
